Chapter Four

Soon it was 4.30 p.m. and time for the pet competition. Mr and Mrs Allen stood back while the owners stood by their pets. The pets were: Patch, the terrier from the pub; Snowy, the cat from the vicarage; Tiddles, the cat from the Evanses’ farm; Sarah, the duck from the Evanses’ farm; Fluffy, the little rabbit from the Evanses’ farm; Eric, the rabbit from the vet’s; and Brandy, the rabbit from the pub.

When they were ready and lined up, Graham and Mary Allen walked up and down the line of pets looking at, stroking and talking to the animals. When they saw Brandy next to Eric, they said how much alike they looked (no one had seen the two rabbits so close together before). Everyone agreed and began to wonder if they could possibly be related. The two rabbits looked at each other with a flicker of recognition.

Then suddenly, Sarah quacked loudly, which meant, “Look at me - I’ve got a new ribbon. No one else is wearing one - does that make me special?” She strutted up and down the table, showing off for the judges and the villagers.

Brandy the rabbit had seen both cats and dogs, but he had never seen a duck before. He ran along the table and chased after Sarah as she flew down to the floor to get away from him. He chased her around the tent, avoiding all the villagers’ feet.

A few of the villagers gave chase, but as Brandy thought they were all joining in with his game of chase with Sarah (as he had done with Patch the dog at the pub) he ran faster. Patch jumped down, barking to Brandy to stop the chase, but the humans thought he too was chasing Sarah.

Chris stepped forward in front of Brandy, calling out to Sarah to come to him, which she did; so he picked her up and held her to him.

Tony and Billy ran after Brandy, who thought it was such good fun. He fell over and Tony managed to catch hold of him before he could run any more.

When everything had calmed down, Patch barked at Brandy, telling him, “It’s only a duck - it’s just she’s vain and a show-off, but she means no harm.”

Once the chaos had calmed down and all the animals were safely back in line, Mr and Mrs Allen asked each owner if their pet had any tricks they would like to perform. Patch shook paws with both of the judges. Snowy the cat meowed along to a song the vicar began to sing. Tiddles joined in with them. Eric copied Brandy, who had sat down, and began to flip things off the table and on to the floor. Both thought it great fun.

Fluffy, the little rabbit, looked around him. What could he do to impress the judges and villagers? He didn’t know any tricks, so he sat down and yawned and began to wash his face and ears with his paw.
